Homeless Education

Definition of Homelessness Under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act

If your family lives:

  • in a shelter, motel, vehicle, or campground
  • in an abandoned building, trailer, or other inadequate accommodations
  • with friends or relatives, because you cannot find or afford housing

Then you have the right to:

  • go to school, no matter where you live or how long you have lived there.
  • continue in the school you attended before you became homeless or the school you last attended.
  • receive transportation to the school you attended before you became homeless.
  • enroll in school without giving a permanent address.
  • enroll and attend classes while the school arranges for the transfer of school records and/or immunization records.
  • educational assistance under the McKinney-Vento.

If your family lives in any of the above situations, you may be eligible for some assistance under the McKinney-Vento Act. Our district homeless liaison can assist in determining eligibility for programs.

How do I know if my family is eligible?

The Student Residency Questionnaire or a conversation with our McKinney Viento Liaison determines your eligibility.  The Student Residency Questionnaire and Education Rights are provided to families:

  1. Upon enrollment
  2. At the beginning of the school year with student information update paperwork
  3. Once during the second semester

When this form is completed, it is sent to our McKinney Vento District Liaison. We treat these forms confidentially.  No copies will be made and it will not be placed in any school files.

The McKinney Vento Liaison will review this document and call any families whose forms indicate they made qualify under the McKinney Vento act.

We also understand that the loss of a home can happen at any time of the year.  Families can call the McKinney Vento liaison at any time to discuss whether they may be eligible for McKinney Vento.
